Barbarian Librarians, a small art and craft collective, was officially founded in March 2010 by Narissa Kent, a former librarian at Norman Williams Library in Woodstock, Vermont. At the Barbarian Librarians booth, you will find t-shirts, stationery, art prints, knitted items, jewelry, and other "amusing oddments", mostly centered around a bookish theme.

A portion of the proceeds from all arts and crafts sales (at least 10% and up to 80%) go to Vermont libraries. If you buy something from the BL booth on Fridays at the Hartland Farmers' Market, the money goes to the Hartland Public Library. The selection is different each week so stop by and see what the Barbarian Librarians have to offer! Support our local library and pick up a gift for the book lover in your life.

Starting next week, Narissa will be offering feather hair extensions and feather earrings using feathers from local fowl! What a treat!

Narissa is also the founder and owner of Barbarian Cooks, which was started just this winter as a way to provide local and healthy food that tastes just as good or better than the not-so-healthy food that we all sometimes crave. Each week at the market, Narissa brings an assortment of gluten-free, vegan and raw food. Vegan cupcakes are usually on the menu. Last week she made garlic-roasted tomatoes. Yum! Some examples of raw snacks include sun-dried tomato crackers and fresh zucchini and walnut crackers. Come for dinner, a snack, or dessert. Free samples available each week!

Narissa would like to encourage everyone to stop by her booth to take the Barbarian Brownie Challenge. If you don't like the brownie, she will gladly give you your money back. What a deal!

Vendor Profile: Contented Butterfly Farm

Tim and Jen Cary own Contented Butterfly Farm in Windsor, VT, a farm that specializes in fine Shetland fleeces, rovings, and registered breeding stock. Tim and Jen started raising sheep in 2004 and now have 34 Shetland sheep in a variety of colors. Three years ago, they added chickens and now sell eggs at the Hartland Farmers' Market. Stop in early if you're looking for eggs as supplies are limited.

If you spin or felt, you will be happy to know that you can pick up fleeces and rovings from Tim and Jen. Eventually, they are hoping to sell their own mill-spun yarn. You can also find little gifts from cedar sachets and catnip toys to nesting helpers and wine cozies.

Each week, the Carys bring an assortment of vegetables from their garden. Last week, they had green peppers, broccoli, green beans and cukes. It's fun to stop by their booth each week to see what they've decided to bring.

Jen enjoys the Hartland Farmers' Market and thinks it's a great place to build a relationship from farm to customer and to learn how your food was grown. Contented Butterfly Farm has plans to be at the Winter Market (Oct. 7, Nov. 4, Dec. 16) so do keep them in mind for holiday gifts.

Hartland resident and former high school teacher, Barbara Barbour began making bags about a year ago as Christmas gifts for friends and family. Barbara's colorful bags are perfect for your gift-giving needs and would make lovely all-purpose totes, handbags, computer bags and more. Her diaper bags are especially popular with customers.

Barbara enjoys selling her bags at the Hartland Farmers' Market because she enjoys spending time with the community. She says it's a great place to sit, relax, and meet up with your friends.

Eleanor and DonDon's is a family business located in Royalton, VT owned by Sevgi Boule. For five years, this family has been in the business of providing delicious food to the Upper Valley. Recently, they purchased a cart that allows them to prepare hot food at the market. If you are looking for a great place for dinner at the Hartland Farmers' Market, be sure to stop by Eleanor and DonDon's for Turkish specialties such as kofte (Turkish burgers), chicken, steak or eggplant parmesan pides (which you may know as pita), and spinach and cheese gozleme. In addition to these delights, they also offer hot dogs and sausages grilled to perfection. All of the meat is local!

If you're in the mood for dessert, try a piece of baklava (your choice of honey or maple) or one of their homemade raisin walnut cookies. You can also find blueberry muffins as well as whole apple pies that are made using Grandma's recipe!

Be sure to bring your appetite and stop by this Friday to try one of the new hot menu items. You'll be glad you did.

Vermonter Maria Rogers has been handcrafting jewelry for over fifteen years. For the past five years, she's been selling her MKR Designs at farmers' markets. Using a mix of precious and semiprecious stones such as garnet, onyx, venetian glass, and swarovski crystal, Maria selects each component of her bracelets, necklaces, and rings carefully. The result? Handcrafted jewelry that would make the perfect gift for that special someone. Her price point is budget friendly as well.

In addition to jewelry, Maria also sells a variety of homemade baked goods such as orange zucchini bread, cinnamon apple cake and even cupcakes every once in awhile. She also has piping hot coffee to warm you up on these cooler evenings. Every week you will find a different surprise as Maria has fruit trees and a garden. Last week she brought Green Zebra tomatoes!

Maria shares her booth at the Hartland Farmer's Market with Linda Dion who sells handmade bags to fit your every need. Computer bags, checkbook cases, makeup bags, eyeglass cases or coin purses, Linda makes them all! Her diaper bags are especially popular. She's been selling her bags at local farmers' markets for two years but has been sewing since high school.

Linda also sews aprons for adults and children. I love the John Deere fabric she uses.

Vendor Profile: Mt. Pleasant Farm

Wes Mattern owns the 8.5 acre Mt. Pleasant Farm in Tunbridge, VT. He also farms an acre in the valley where he concentrates on hot weather crops. In exchange for the land, Mattern donates food to the food bank and the local church.

At the market, you will find Wes hanging out under his vintage scale cheerfully slicing the famous oatmeal molasses bread (come early or you'll miss out), handing out dill and bread and butter pickle samples, or polishing and spritzing his beautiful vegetables. He has a wide range of vegetables and some unusual varieties such as the Romanian frying pepper.

This is Wes' first year with melons and he has grown honeydew, cantaloupe and the French Charentais melon, which is delicious if you were wondering. If you are in the mood for tomatoes, try one of his heirloom Brandywine tomatoes that he started all the way back in February. So flavorful!

Stop by this Friday for free samples of oatmeal molasses bread or to try a taste of his delicious pickles. You'll be happy you did.

Vendor Profile: Harmony Farm

Formerly Hartland Flower Farm, Harmony Farm is in the process of reinventing itself. No longer a commercial cut-flower farm, Harmony Farm is a now a nature-based, non-profit educational center in Hartland, Vermont. Lucky for us, we can still buy their lovely bouquets at the Hartland Farmer's Market.

Currently, you'll find the most charming wildflower bouquets at the Harmony Farm booth. Last week's bunches included white gooseneck loosestrife, blue globe thistle, goldenrod and black-eyed susans. In September, you can look forward to hydrangeas, which are popular with Harmony Farm's repeat customers. If you missed this year's peony bunches, you'll be delighted to find a peony or two tucked into the wildflower bouquets.

Flowers help add a little cheer to the dinner table and of course would make the perfect, simple birthday or congratulations gift. The bouquets are wrapped in a pretty brown kraft paper and tied with ribbon--a beautiful presentation.

Vendor Profile: Cob Hill

Cob Hill is a co-housing community in Hartland, VT that is the home of Cedar Mountain Farm. Kerry Gawalt and Stephen Leslie of Cedar Mountain Farm raise local meat and grow a wide variety of delicious vegetables without using pesticides. On the farm there are Fjord draft horses that help with plowing, moving stones, haying, and more. The horses are a great alternative to tractors and are a part of a more ecological way of farming that Cedar Mountain embraces.

Just last week, the Cob Hill booth was offering rainbow chard, green beans, carrots, garlic, scallions, beets, kale, snap peas, herbs, and potatoes. If you're in the mood for a steak or hamburger, you'll find local meat at the Cob Hill booth, too. Try the beef sausages. Delicious!

A special treat is the Cob Hill cheese for sale at their booth. The cheese is made from their Jersey cow milk, which is rich and quite delicious. I am a big fan of their alpine cheese, Mt. Ascutney. Want a taste? Stop by the booth and ask for a sample.

There are more treasures awaiting you at the Cob Hill booth including maple syrup, beautiful cards with photographs by Carla Kimball, A Little Farm Story by Jay Mead and homemade treats.

Vendor Profile: Rhine River Bakery

Got a sweet tooth? Head on over to the Rhine River Bakery booth on Friday at the Hartland Farmer's Market to get your fix. Angelika Stedman of Hartland, VT makes delicious German pastries and breads from scratch using many local ingredients. Angelika hails from Germany and named her bakery after the German river that she swam in as a small girl.

Her loyal customers return each week for her little cinnamon rolls, drizzled with white icing. Her beautiful fruit tarts sell out quickly so come early if you have your heart set on one. She bakes streusel and homemade breads, too, including her famous bacon cheddar bread, which is sourdough based. Iced coffee and lemonade are available at the Rhine River Bakery booth to quench your thirst on these hot summer days.

Every once in awhile, you might just catch Angelika performing with the musical guests at the market (see below). Last week, she surprised everyone by joining Paul Brotchie in a wonderful rendition of the House of the Rising Sun!

If you pay a visit to the Rhine River Bakery booth, you are guaranteed a delicious baked good served with a smile. Stop by and see what Angelika has baked from scratch this week and feel free to inquire about special orders, including gluten-free items.

If you are looking for a local gift, please stop by Joe and Alice Bliven's booth at the Hartland Farmers' Market. Joe and Alice are retired and semi-retired Hartland residents who spend their free time using their hands to create unique items perfect for gift-giving.

Alice Bliven has been knitting and attending craft shows for several years. She knits beautiful baby sweaters, hats, and blankets that would make adorable baby shower gifts. She also sells cozy, knitted scarves and afghans. If you haven't seen Alice's homemade cards for all occasions, you are in for a treat!

Joe is a woodworker who crafts assorted whirligigs, bluebird houses, whimsical bird feeders and birdhouses using white pine or ponderosa pine. His mini birdhouses are lovely ornaments to hang in your windowsill or on your Christmas tree.

Need a hostess gift or a birthday gift? How about a bluebird house (with a rough or smooth finish) or a knitted afghan? You'll find Joe and Alice Bliven and their unique creations at the Hartland Farmers' Market each Friday at the end closest to the library. Don't miss their charming booth of handcrafted delights.

Profile: Side Track Farm

Side Track Farm is a small farm in Hartland, VT owned by Silas and Chris Jacobson. Silas and Chris are dedicated to using local resources to manage their farm, including manure from their own animals and local seeds when possible. They raise chickens, turkeys and goats and these animals contribute to the natural cycles at the farm. The chickens and turkeys help keep insect populations in check while the goats keep the pastures open and provide manure for fertilizer.

No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are used at Side Track, and all of the produce is planted and harvested by hand.

Each week you'll find a variety of vegetables and herbs at the Side Track farm booth. Don't miss their tomatillos and alliums (garlic, garlic scapes, onions, etc.) which they are known for. My husband is a big fan of their dried black turtle beans. He insists that they are the best he's ever eaten! I love their edamame--the perfect snack for adults and kids alike.

Chris also makes charming flower bouquets, handmade paper, and pottery--all available at the Side Track Farm booth on Fridays at the Hartland Farmers' Market.

At the market and need some dinner? Look no further than the Raycin Farms booth. Raycin Farms is owned by Raymond and Cindy West of White River Junction. Each week, Cindy dishes up some of the best pulled pork sandwiches and sausage subs in town all made with local, Raycin Farms meat. You can take home frozen meat as well as Cindy brings a cooler full of pastured pork and grass-fed beef to each market, but stop by early. Cindy sold out of her ground beef last week!

For dessert try one of her famous buttermilk doughnuts, whoopie pies, or specialty cookies (I love the chocolate chip, oatmeal, coconut, and corn flake cookies!). The pumpkin apple bread is not to be missed--regular customers return again and again for a slice.

Visit the Raycin Farms booth for local sandwiches, baked goods, freezer meat or to inquire about purchasing a larger cut for your freezer or next party. Cindy will be at the Hartland Farmers' Market each week.

Profile: Clay Hill Corners

Clay Hill Corners is a blueberry and vegetable farm owned by Carol Stedman and Marty Banak in Hartland, VT. This seven-acre farm has a high tunnel, a greenhouse, a small hoop house and many outdoor garden beds. A flock of Indian Runner ducks helps keep the insects at bay as Clay Hill Corners uses organic practices only.

Carol is famous for her spicy greens, a special mix of salad greens that includes mild lettuce and spicier greens such as arugula and mustard. In addition, Carol bakes homemade quiches using ingredients from her farm and other local ingredients from her friends and neighbors. Look for these specialties and other treats such as seasonal jams, pickles, honey, hummus, and granola at the Clay Hill Corners booth each Friday or visit the farm stand at 390 Clay Hill Road in Hartland.

Profile: Bugbee's Rubbish Removal

Hartland's own Bugbee's Rubbish Removal has been in the business for fifty-nine years and now will be at the Hartland Farmers' Market each Friday. If you have trash or recycling, just bring it with you and stop by the red town barn. For a mere $3 per trash bag or $1 per box of recycling, you can lighten your load and support a local business at the same time.

In addition, Bugbee's Rubbish Removal will tackle larger items as well. Just give them a call with your questions-- 802-436-2742--or stop by the market to meet them. Bring your kids! They'll love a close-up look at the truck.

We are happy to partner with Bugbee's Rubbish Removal to provide this convenient service during the Farmers' Market hours. Please consider bringing your trash and/or recycling this Friday.

This year the market is collaborating with Hartland's own Bugbee's Rubbish Removal to provide on-site rubbish and recycling collection during market hours for a small fee.

The Farmers Market season kicks off this year on May 29th, 2011 with Hartland Farm Fest. Come out and support The Upper Valley Farm to School program and visit with your favorite farmers. If you've never been to Farm Fest before you're in for a treat! Wood-fired pizza, ice cream, children's activities, farm animals and more! Fun times for everyone in your family.

The Hartland Farmers Market is being worked on in preparation for the new season in 2011. A new set of evenings and a music schedule is being put together. The first event will be Farm Fest 2011 which will be Sunday May 29, from 11am to 3 pm, and then regular markets will start after that. There are also blueberry bushes for sale! This is an effort that also involves the Garden Club, in an effort to promote permaculture around town. They planted 350 daffodil bulbs at the library last October 21, 2010, in concert with many other groups around the globe who are concerned about our environment, and the blueberry bushes are planned as the first of many offerings to promote landscapes that are easy to care for and also useful. You can place an order if you wish to buy many plants, or single plants will be for sale at the Garden Club's booth at Farm Fest, and also at the Farmers Market. The Hartland Farmers Market is open for business on Friday afternoons 4-7 pm
at the Library grounds at 153 Route 5, in the center of Hartland, VT, 05048.

There are many vendors selling produce, started plants, prepared foods,
baked goods, locally ground flour, artisanal cheeses, eggs, herbs,
meats, preserves, cut flowers, spices, crafts, photographs and cards.
There will be a wood fired pizza oven later this summer.
(More vendors are welcome, especially for dairy products and seasonal vegetables.)

We have a full schedule of "Locally grown produce and hand picked music".

You can visit with friends and neighbors at the market,

or enjoy the prepared food sitting next to Lull's brook while listening to the music.

The Hartland Farmers Market received a great start at this year's Hartland Farm Fest 2010. We were introduced by Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Roger Allbee, with a followup by Senator Patrick Leahy. HFM manager Sharon Irwin presented Roger Allbee with some sample products provided by market vendors, and then Farm Fest gave Roger Allbee and Patrick Leahy honorary Farm Fest T shirts, which will be on sale later this summer at the market. See you there!
